Extra support for UK SMEs from the European Investment bank
Britain's small and medium-sized businesses will benefit from up to £4 billion in loans from the European Investment Bank (EIB) over the next four years, announced the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling. UK banks have already signalled their interest in securing around £1 billion a year from the EIB.  The banks also welcomed the recent reforms by the EIB to modernise and simplify its SME loan products, namely:
- allowing financing up to 100% of the intermediary's intervention;
- removing the limitation on the purchase of used fixed assets;
- allowing financing in all sectors apart from clearly excluded sectors, e.g. arms, gambling, etc;
- including working capital into the range of financial needs eligible for EIB finance
- including R&D expenses from the concept of innovation and including IP rights finance;
