Important changes to annual leave entitlements and flexible working rights

Annual leave entitlement will increase from 4.8 weeks to 5.6 weeks from 1 April 2009. For employees who work a five-day week, their holiday entitlement will increase from 24 days to 28 days (pro rata for part-time staff).  The changes do not create a legal right to have a paid day off on Bank Holidays and this remains a contractual matter.

From 6 April 2009 the right to request flexible working will be extended to parents of children aged 16 and under.  The right to request flexible working is currently open to parents of children under six or parents of disabled children under 18 and to carers of adults.

The Technium Challenge offers a prize package worth £30,000 to the overall winner, including £5,000 in cash, £5,000 worth of rent at a Technium facility, and £1,000 worth of consultancy and marketing support.

The UK-wide contest, provided by the Welsh Assembly Government-backed business incubation network Technium, is open to technology or science-based businesses that have been trading for less than two years and can demonstrate:
- A well developed patentable idea or technology which involves a strong R&D element
- A strong interest in generating new ideas

An initial application must be submitted by 27 March, then selected proposals will be given assistance and advice to develop a more in-depth business plan by 20 April.  Entries will be assessed against a broad range of criteria, including innovation and growth potential, financial sustainability, capabilities and track record, and viability.

MANAGEMENT TIP of the WEEK

Find your niche to improve business success

It is more acceptable than ever before to target a smaller crowd to achieve your corporate success. You don’t need to have millions of clients to be profitable: even massive mass-market players are starting to move towards a focus on the niche or narrower audience.

Search engines are a good barometer for business activity. They rely for their survival on offering the public an intuitive interface with the web that will return the business websites that they need, and a shift of focus towards offering niche sector searches has been noted recently.

To focus your business on a smaller market will enable you to minimise financial waste and maximise return on investment when promoting your products and services.
