STOP PRESS......
Get ready to bin old P45s
If you are an employer, then from 6 April 2009 you must use the new A4 version of form P45.
The new forms includes an employee's date of birth and gender. Any stocks of old A5 versions of the P45 should be destroyed by 6 April.
Employers who use HMRC's free Online PAYE service can print parts 1A, 2 and 3 of form P45 onto A4 plain paper, when they have submitted the P45 part 1 (employee leaving details) to HMRC online.
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has also issued an alert to employers with 50 or more employees, who must send their employee starter and leaver information - P45s, P46s and P46(Pen) for pensions - online from 6 April 2009. Failure to do so could result in a penalty.

BUSINESS ARTICLE of the WEEK
When Goal Setting Goes Bad
If you ever wondered about the real value of goal setting in your organization, join the club. Despite the mantra that goals are good, the process of setting beneficial goals is harder than it looks. New research by HBS professor Max H. Bazerman and colleagues explores the hidden cost when stretch goals are misguided.
NEWSFLASH of the WEEK
Budget cuts are here but the news is not all that bad
The latest quarterly survey of 892 employers by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) reveals that around two-thirds of UK companies either had an organisational budget cut in 2008 or are about to have one. The cuts look to affect travel, fringe benefits and the opportunity to work overtime.
Significant differences are beginning to appear between the private, public and voluntary sectors. For example, three-quarters of private sector employers (74%) have reduced their travel expenses, compared with 50% in the public and voluntary sectors.
The recession also appears to be encouraging more employers to adopt greener working practices. Almost two thirds (62%) have increased their use of tele/videoconferencing while 43% have increased their use of public transport.
Most HR professionals say that employee workloads and stress levels have increased in their organisation, but staff motivation does not appear to have deteriorated. This is indicative of the increased effort employers are making to communicate regularly with their staff.

MANAGEMENT TIP of the WEEK
Avoid Bad Decisions by Taking Advice
We make countless decisions every day: when to hold a meeting, who to hire for a critical role, whether to greenlight a new project. For high-stakes decisions where a mistake might be fatal, involve an impartial party in your decision-making process.
Someone with a fresh perspective and without your emotional attachment to the situation can help identify where your decisions may be unduly influenced by past experiences.
Ask a colleague from another department or an outside consultant to play this role. For crucial decisions, it will be well worth the time to seek that extra opinion.
