NEWSFLASH of the WEEK
Government announces trade credit insurance cover for business
Business Secretary Lord Mandelson has launched a scheme providing up to £5bn of additional trade credit insurance to businesses who have suffered reductions in their level of cover. This will be delivered as part of the Working Capital Scheme and will help mitigate the cash flow constraints caused by the withdrawal of trade credit insurance cover and constraints on the provision of working capital that this withdrawal has created.
From May 1 until December 31 this year, UK businesses will be able to purchase six months' 'top-up' insurance from the Government if credit limits on their UK customers are reduced. The qualifying window will be backdated to include any reductions since April 1.
The scheme comes in response to growing concern from businesses across all sectors of the economy that reductions in the value of insurance cover create pressure on suppliers to shorten payment terms, and can place additional pressure on businesses' working capital facilities.
MANAGEMENT TIP of the WEEK
Seize Downturn Opportunities
Even recession has a silver lining; exploiting it can help you cope better in the economic downturn and secure you lasting competitive advantages, too. If your company is well-positioned, consider these:
1) Now may be the time to hire people who can take your organization to the next level, as salaries and contractor's fees become cheaper.
2) If you are cash-positive, take advantage of the buyer's market. Consider making acquisitions now when some good companies come "on sale."
3) Reinforce what makes your company stand out. Increase your market share by sharpening marketing messages while your competitors may not be in a position to do so.
4) Ask your customer why they do or don't buy your products and about their purchase experiences. Ask them what steps they take to a find the product they need and what obstacles they meet on the way. Understanding their answers will help you create and market products that your customers truly want.
