Hope, Greed and Fear: The Psychology behind the Financial Crisis
At a recent conference called, "Crisis of Confidence: The Recession and the Economy of Fear," an interdisciplinary panel explored the psychology behind today's economy: mania and over-optimism behind the housing bubble, a lack of self-control by consumers hooked on debt, and the shock and feelings of betrayal of those who thought they were making safe investments, but now find themselves facing a frightening and uncertain future
NEWSFLASH of the WEEK
Empty shops revival plan to prevent high street decline
The Government is announcing new measures to help communities find creative ways to reduce the negative impact empty shops have on the high street.
The new provisions include special planning application waivers, standard interim-use leases, and temporarily leasing of shops to councils, which will allow empty shops to get makeovers for use as cultural, community or learning services. The revival plan will also include special planning application waivers to allow local planning authorities to implement LDOs with greater speed and flexibility.
To help further, 70% of all properties will be exempted from empty property rates and businesses can also defer 60% of next year's rate increase and transitional relief increase to the following two years.
Local Business can also agree with councils to establish Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) using ring fenced business rates to improve the business environment of the town centre. Full details of Looking after our Town Centres guide can be found at http://www.communities.gov.uk/publications/planningandbuilding/towncentres
MANAGEMENT TIP of the WEEK
Small Is the New Big
Big companies used to win out over small ones because of their experience, impressive client lists, and seeming permanence. We trusted big business because it was big, but the economic crisis has changed that.
Small companies are now winning the confidence and the business of recession customers. No matter the size of your company, restore customer trust by doing what small companies do well:
- Be available. Customers of small companies don't need to holler "agent" into a phone to talk to a real person. Make it easy for customers to find you and react quickly to requests and demands.
- Keep your promises. It goes without saying, but always follow through on what you say you're going to do.
- Grow sustainably. Consumer confidence is shaken and customers want to know that businesses are going to be around no matter what the economic situation. Assure customers you are acting in a financially responsible and sustainable way.
