Employer Annual Returns are Due by 19 May
Large employers, with 50 or more employees, must file their 2008/09 Employer Annual Return online, or they could face an additional penalty. Smaller employers, with fewer than 50 employees, can still file their return on paper, but will qualify for a £75 tax-free payment if they file online. Agents, tax advisers or payroll bureaux can also file on behalf of employers. Small employers will still qualify for the £75 tax-free payment, whether they file online themselves or through one of these intermediaries.
To file online, employers must first register with HMRC's "PAYE Online for Employers" service. It can take up to a week to get the Activation PIN after registering, so don't leave it until the last minute before the filing deadline.
Support and advice is available from HMRC's Employers Helpline on 08457 143 143, online at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/paye and http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/podcasts or from the HMRC's Employer CD-ROM.

NEWSFLASH of the WEEK
EU slashes Trade Mark Registration Costs
The UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has commenced a public consultation and review of its trade mark services and fees. Its proposals follow The European Trade Mark Office's recent announcement that the official fees for filing and registering a Community Trade Mark have been cut by around 40% to €1000. The IPO's proposals include:
- “Early Assist” Application Service
This is a new service that provides an examination report which details the results of the search for potentially conflicting trade marks. This service will be available for new applications who eFile their applications and pay 50% of the application fees.
- Electronic Filing
The IPO propose to offer a reduction of £30 from the basic £200 application fee when the application is made online.
- Adjustment in Fees
As well a discount for eFiling the IPO proposes a decrease the fee to file an opposition against a prospective trade mark from £200 to £100.
Although the initial cost associated with trade marks has decreased the ongoing cost of managing and policing your brand remains.
MANAGEMENT TIP of the WEEK
Know Exactly Where The Money Comes From
Companies often focus on revenues without much regard for where exactly the profit is coming from.
You need to understand exactly where you make your money because that means you understand your business model well, and that's going to let you make the best decisions for growth.
Understanding your income break-down by product lines will help you make better decisions about how to price various products, where to invest resources, where to make changes, and when to cut costs. Even if you run a small business, you should know the cost structure for your top product categories.
Identify the profit-leading products and be sure you're making the right ongoing investments. Find out which products aren't making you money and why. If your company has numerous products, batch them into categories that will make this type of measurement easier.
