Reform of Copyright Tribunal Rules will Save Time and Money to Small Businesses

The Intellectual Property Office announced a review of the Copyright Tribunal rules to make the Tribunal quicker and cheaper to use, particularly for individuals and small businesses.  The consultation includes a proposal for a fast-track system for cases of low financial value in order to improve accessibility for small business and individuals.

The Copyright Tribunal is an independent tribunal established under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act (CDPA) 1988.  Its primary purpose is to resolve disputes between collecting or licensing societies and users on the terms and conditions of licenses, or on the refusal by licensing societies to provide licenses.  The Tribunal also has a wider responsibility to hear cases referred to it by the Secretary of State.

The Intellectual Property Office is introducing these proposals to ensure that the Copyright Tribunal functions effectively by dealing with cases justly in a rapidly changing business environment.

Get Your Company's Story Out to Customers

What's your company's story?  What makes it unique, and how does it positively affect people's lives? If your company is not getting that story out to customers in a consistent, thorough way, it's losing out on a chance to distinguish itself from rivals. And in today's economy, that can be fatal.

Are you a company with a history of innovation and service improvements?  Are you one that uses the latest technology?  What are your company values and your principles?  Turn some of your stories into case studies and distribute them to your existing customer and customer groups you want to win over.

Also, make sure that you use the right channels and the right technology to spread the word.  For example, if your company serves businesses, make sure your marketing message can be consumed via BlackBerry.  Create multiple but consistent and coordinated touch points will broadcast your company's story most effectively -- and engage your customers.

Is This The End for Bricks-and-Mortar Retailing?

With big-name U.S. retailers like Macy's, Starbucks, and Home Depot closing "underperforming" retail locations and online e-tailing going strong, is the bricks-and-mortar model still a viable strategy?  According to faculty at Emory University and its Goizueta Business School some products are still more likely to be purchased at a place where consumers can experience the goods.   Click here to read the articles.

Government's £14 billion IT spend to boost workers' skills and job prospects

Companies winning Government-funded IT contracts will have to fulfil a commitment to skills training from now on.

The Government currently spends nearly £14 billion a year on procuring IT services and it wants to make sure this spend contributes to improving the skills base of the IT workforce.  Improving skills across the whole IT sector will ensure the industry can compete internationally and take full advantage of job opportunities that will arise in the future.

Today's move is part of a radical shake-up of the skills and training system instigated by John Denham to tackle expected skills shortages and to ensure that we have a workforce with the right skills in the right place at the right time.

The Sector Skills Council for IT has said the IT industry will need around 131,000 people each year for the next 10 years and that most of these will be graduates.  UK digital industries alone produce an annual gross value added (GVA) of around £86 billion, 10.9% of the UK total, and have the potential to contribute a further £35 billion over the next five to seven years.
