Business Confidence is Rising for First Time in 2 Years

The latest UK Business Confidence Monitor indicates that the economic decline may have reached the bottom, with business professionals feeling more optimistic after two years of successive declines in confidence.  The findings, published by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales reveals a rise in confidence from -45.3 to -28.2, an increase of over 17 points from Q1 2009 but still a long way from +4.8 measured in Q3 2007, the last time the index was positive.

While businesses still report a reduction in profit, turnover and sales over the last year but expect the position to improve in the next twelve months.  Across the sectors, the Banking, Finance & Insurance sector is the most confident at 6.0 compared to -46.0, the Property sector is the second most confident (-20.0) and the Retail & Wholesale continues to hold up well (-21.8) despite initial fears for their prospects on the High Street.  The Hotel & Catering sector remains the most negative sector with the lowest confidence rating of -48.7 as the affect of the cut in consumer spending on luxuries is felt.

4 Ways to Exceed Customer Expectations

Exceeding customer expectations can easily help you win repeat orders.  Here are four tips to help you can go beyond your customers' expectation and win clients for life:

1. Beat the deadline. Getting work done ahead of time gives the client flexibility and demonstrates you are efficient and customer-focused. When agreeing to a deadline, choose one you know you can beat.

2. Ask proactive questions. Clients appreciate it when you act as a thought partner and demonstrate your concern for the process and its result.

3. Know when to "take orders". Deference is important but too much of it may make you come across as indifferent.  Inspire confidence by acting collegial, enthusiastic and proving yourself to be a competent expert.

4. Give feedback. Every process can be improved, and you are in a unique position to provide feedback. If the circumstances are right, tactfully give thoughtful and constructive criticism.

Building Businesses in Turbulent Times

Battered by contracting markets and frozen credit, many businesses today are fighting for survival.  Indeed, the current global financial crisis provides a mandate for restructuring.  But survival is not the end goal, says Harvard Business School professor Lynda M. Applegate, head of the School's Entrepreneurial Management Unit.

HSBC Report Predicts UK to Become Pioneer in Knowledge Industries

British industry is headed for the biggest shake up since the Industrial Revolution, with the country set to be a pioneer in video games, super foods and robotics, according to a new study, according to HSBC's "Future of Business".

The report predicts that five "super cities" - Brighton, Leeds, Liverpool, London and Newcastle - will emerge as knowledge industry centres, as factories, power stations and livestock wil be supplanted by centres for gaming, wind farms and robotics re-drawing the economic landscape around the "tropics of knowledge and next generation industries". The findings are based on interviews with 500 entrepreneurs and company directors.

The authors say change is being accelerated by the recession, forcing businesses to adopt more flexible ways of working and spurring on technological advances and global trade.

The report also predicts that Dundee will emerge as a hub for biotech, video gaming and nutraceuticals (foods with health and beauty benefits). The nutraceuticals industry is already worth £50bn worldwide and is expected to grow with an ageing population and rising obesity levels.
