New 'Fit Note' Unveiled
A new medical 'fit note' to replace the current 'sick note' was unveiled by the Government along with a twelve week consultation on its design. The new 'fit note' will enable people to get the best possible advice about staying in work, and if they can't work what their employer can do to help them return to work sooner. For example, if the employee has a problem with mobility, suggesting a job where they can work sitting down rather than standing up.
The introduction of the 'fit note' is part of the Government's response to Dame Carol Black's groundbreaking report into the health of Britain's working age population, which was published in March 2008. Working age ill-health in terms of working days lost is costing over £100bn each year to the British economy (as estimated in Black Review).
Absences that last over four weeks make up around 40 percent of days lost to absence (CBI survey). 5.9 million people in employment in Great Britain say that they have a long-standing health condition (official data).
Three tips to Manage Work-related Stress
We've been told over and over again about the harmful effects of stress, but how can we handle stress if its source doesn't go away? Some common reactions to stress are micromanaging, making heavy-handed suggestions, and second-guessing decisions. If you find yourself doing these things, pause and try these instead:
1. Figure out what your stress reaction is. Try to respond to stress by doing something productive - like doing some cleaning. If your stress reaction is unhealthy, pay careful attention to your behavior and stop your reaction before it has harmful effects.
2. Build Your Resilience. Think positively and focus on what you want, not what you fear you will lose. Accept that change is going to happen with or without you.
3. Take decisive action. Take a long-term perspective and tackle problems in view of that. Don't avoid problems and don't get hung up on a specific event of a day.

IR35 Raises Only £1.5m per Year for Treasury
The leading freelancers' association has revealed that the Treasury makes a mere £1.5million a year via the controversial IR35 rules, falling well short of its expectations.
These data were revealed thanks to the Professional Contractors Group, which has campaigned tirelessly against IR35. While the initial regulatory impact assessment for IR35 back in 1999 stated that HMRC expected to generate £220 million per year in National Insurance contributions alone, the overall income between 2002 and 2008 was only £9.2 million.
IR35” is a piece of tax legislation announced in 1999, which took effect from April 2000. The legislation means that the Revenue can tax some contractors as though they are employees of their clients. Contractors caught by IR35 pay significantly more tax reducing their take home pay by up to 25%. The IR35 rules have been much disliked by freelancers and business groups who see it as a legislation that unjustly and unfairly targets them.
