UK Economy can Expect a "Slow and Gradual" Return to Growth
Following the release of several 'upbeat' economic reports in recent weeks, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) says that the worst is over, but a return to growth is likely to be a subdued and gradual affair.
The CBI says that the economy is stabilising and the worst is certainly over, but it only expects modest growth to resume during the first quarter of 2010; 0.1% and 0.3% in the first two quarters of 2010. For 2010 as a whole, the average annual GDP growth is expected to be around 0.7%.
Overall, the economy will have shrunk by 4.8% during the recession if the figures turn out to be right - not as bad as the 5.9% slump witnessed during the early 1980's. In terms of inflation and interest rates, the CBI expects inflation to drop below the Bank of England's 2% target during the third quarter of 2009, and remain under that level until the end of 2010, with the Bank of England introducing only modest increases in the bank interest rate from its current level of 0.5%.
3 Tips for Building Support from Others
In today's worlds, persuasion is not only a valuable skill but an indispensable one. Use these tools to influence others to support your position or projects:
1. Activate reciprocity. One good turn generates another and a favour you do today is likely to be reciprocated down the road. Speak in favour of his/her project or viewpoint in a meeting or share useful information that he/she may not get otherwise.
2. Focus on the other person's positive attributes. This requires that you consciously look for something you genuinely like about a person. Even if he/she is a terror at work, there might be something you can admire about his personal interests, his past experiences, or the causes he supports. Once you found the positive trait, compliment him/her on it. By showing your approval, you help the other to like you.
3. Invoke the person's previous opinions and behaviours. When you remind people of their previous position on an issue, they are more likely to behave in a way that is consistent with that position. This is an example of influence someone by giving them a reputation to uphold.
Employment Trends 2009 - Work Patterns in the Recession
The recession has inevitably caused rising unemployment, but according to the latest employment survey by CBI, most employers are not changing their bonus schemes and over 90% of them are maintaining the value of redundancy packages.
While two-thirds of employers are operating some form of recruitment freeze and there is uncertainty about when conditions might improve, what is striking and encouraging is the extent to which organisations show flexibility and adaptability to achieve cost savings while preserving jobs wherever possible. £2.1 Billion up in Smoke for UK Businesses Each Year
Smokers are costing employers up to £2.1 billion every year according to the first ever study of the detailed cost of smoking to UK businesses published today.
The report, by the London School of Economics (LSE) on behalf of NHS Smokefree, says that the staggering costs are due to illness absences (1.8 excess sickness days per smoker per year) and by smokers taking cigarette breaks (£1 billion a year).
When businesses are looking more than ever to reduce costs and increase productivity, these findings provide a compelling case for employers to urge workers quit smoking. Employers can ask for free support from the NHS in the workplace, such as one-to-one or group support sessions with trained stop smoking advisers.
The direct costs caused by smoking related absences and smoking breaks borne by different sectors are as follows:
o Elementary administration and service occupations - £115.4m
o Sales occupations and customer service operations - £98.8m
o Elementary trades, plant and storage - £103.2m
o Process, plant and machine operatives - £105m
o Transport and mobile machine drivers/operatives - £67.7m
o Skilled, construction and building trade - £53.8m
