Government to Invest £1 billion in Businesses of the Future

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, with the Department of Energy and Climate Change and the Department of Health, will invest £150 million in promising start-ups and existing small companies alongside private sector investment on an equal basis known as pari-passu.

The Government wants to use this investment to leverage enough private investment to build a fund of up to £1 billion over the next 10 years.  The UK Innovation Investment Fund forms part of the Government’s strategy for Building Britain’s Future and will provide crucial support for some of the most promising start-ups and existing small companies to boost future UK competitiveness.

The Fund will operate on a Fund of Funds structure which means it will not invest directly in companies, but rather invest in a small number of specialist technology funds that have the expertise and track record to invest directly in companies.  The UK Innovation Investment Fund will be one of the largest ever technology funds in Europe.

How to Have Better Communication in Meetings

Lets face it, meetings often can feel like a waste of time.  Here are four things you can do to make your meetings more fruitful and less frustrating:

1. Prepare. Yes, it seems obvious, but too many people come to meetings unprepared. Send important documents in advance and keep them concise.

2. Stay on Track. So much time is wasted when people get off topic.  Ask yourself before you speak, "Is this helpful and relevant to what we are trying to accomplish?"

3. Make it two-way. If you're holding a meeting just to deliver news, you're better off sending a memo.  Engage everyone and get new ideas by asking for differing opinions.

4. Listen.  Make sure that everybody's mobile phones and BlackBerries are switched off.  If the meeting isn't used to share views and contributions from all those present, then it is wasting your time.

Learn to Think Outside of the Box

Creative ideas are often the result of two or more seemingly non-overlapping concepts.  The more we expose ourselves to diverse experiences, the more likely we are to facilitate our creativity, and organisational innovation.  Angela Leung, a psychology professor at Singapore Management University, explains why people’s exposure to multiple cultures increases their readiness to sample ideas from foreign cultures, increasing their level of creativity even further.

Martha Lane Fox, the Government's New Champion for Digital Inclusion

The announcement of Martha Lane Fox as the Government’s new Champion for Digital Inclusion, follows the Digital Britain report’s commitment to do more for the 17 million people who are still excluded from digital technology.

The role of a Champion for Digital Inclusion was first recommended by Paul Murphy, then Secretary of State for Wales and Minister for Digital Inclusion, in the HM Government’s Delivering Digital Inclusion, an Action Plan for Consultation, launched in October 2008.

They key findings of the report were that 17 million people in the UK are not online and that there is a strong correlation between digital exclusion and social exclusion. The report also suggested the considerable potential that technology has to improve the lives of disadvantaged citizens and communities.

Martha is also co-founder and chairman of Lucky Voice whose mission is to bring back the joy of singing together into everyday life.  Martha is a Non-Executive Director at Marks & Spencer plc, Channel 4 Television and Mydeco and a Trustee of Reprieve.  As Champion for Digital Inclusion, she will be working with a Task Force of experts from a range of related organisations.
