STOP PRESS......
Tax deadline reminder
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is issuing a reminder to anyone filing a Self Assessment tax return - don't forget to submit it online and on time, or you could risk a £100 penalty. If you haven't yet filed your 2007/08 tax return, you must send it online to HMRC by the 31 January deadline - file on paper and you could receive a £100 penalty, as the new 31 October paper-filing deadline has now passed.
If you're new to online filing, you'll need to register by visiting the HMRC website at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/sa and clicking "Register for Self Assessment Online". A pin number will then be posted to you - it can take up to seven days to arrive, so make sure you register by 21 January, to allow enough time for the pin to arrive and for you to file your return online.
And don't forget, 31 January is also the deadline for paying any tax you owe for the 2007/08 tax year.

BUSINESS ARTICLE of the WEEK
Marketing Your Way Through a Recession
In a recession, consumers become value oriented, distributors are concerned about cash, and employees worry about their jobs. But a downturn is no time to stop spending on marketing. The key, says professor John Quelch of Harvard Business School is to understand how the needs of your customers and partners change, and adapt your strategies to the new reality.
NEWSFLASH of the WEEK
Business owners lose faith in Gordon Brown's leadership
The number of business owners who feel "better" today under Gordon Brown's leadership compared to when he first came to power has fallen sharply once the realities of the recession become more apparent.
In a survey f 230 small businesses, carried out by telecoms specialists Unicom, those who think they are better off today than they were 18 months ago when Gordon Brown came to power has plummeted. Those who feel better under his leadership have declined from 17% in June 2007 to 5% today - a fall of 70% and those who feel worse has increase from 25% in June 2007 to 45% today - an increase of 76%.
The survey was conducted at the end of November when the government announced a reduction in VAT and also showed that less than 20% of business owners felt that the decision to reduce VAT would benefit them.
Thanks to a long period of strong economic growth in the UK, for many small businesses this is the very firts time they have to face the effects of economic slowdown and their confidence during these uncertain times depends heavily on how they judge the competence of the man in charge of the economy.

MANAGEMENT TIP of the WEEK
Ask for Support the Right Way
Do you need support -- in the form of funding, personnel, equipment, or other resources -- for addressing a problem? If so, how you ask for that support can determine whether you succeed or fail.
It's vital to present a fact-based business case: Show that you've explored all the options for solving the problem at hand, not just the alternative you're proposing. Lay out the pluses and minuses of the option you're advocating. And cite statistics documenting what will happen to your group's performance if you don't get the support you're asking for.
Focus on the facts, and you will come through as a responsible and proactive, not reactive, manager who is on top of the situation.
