How to Sell Yourself in 15 Seconds or Less

Make sure you can pitch yourself effectively, even when you've got nothing more than an elevator pitch to make your case.  Use these tips to sell yourself on first sight:

1. Keep your eyes on the prize. Don't focus on details before the big picture is laid out. Keep the larger project goal in mind and resist temptation to dive into minutiae.

2. Practice, practice, practice. Don't be caught off guard. Practice your pitch many times before you need it - including answering questions!

3. Focus on impact. Don't recite your resume. Instead of focusing on years of experience, describe what you hope to accomplish next.

4. Forget what your mother told you. We were all told not to brag, but selling yourself requires breaking that cultural taboo. Be prepared to toot your own horn, gracefully.

Innovation in the Creative Industries

The Technology Strategy Board has published its first strategy document on technology innovation in the creative industries.  The UK is a world leader in culture and media and these industries make a major contribution to the economy. Technology is challenging existing business models and providing a spur for innovation and growth. The strategy focuses on the priority areas for an innovation focus and we welcome views on its implementation.

More people plan to start up businesses later in life

The average age at which people feel totally confident and comfortable about their skills at work is 37, according to a recent YouGov survey of 2,100 UK adults commissioned by Standard Life.  This works out to around 30,000 hours in the job.

The survey into generational differences in attitudes to work found that ‘fulfilment’ is even more elusive: although 79% expect to or do feel fulfilled by their career at some point in their life, those over 55 on average said that fulfilment peaked at 50.

This considerable time investment in career potentially supports why 85% of the population do not intend to stop work at retirement age and a third (33%) of the population wanting to continue in full time work post retirement age, with 31% wanting to carry on in a similar role but on their own terms.

The surveyalso  suggests that the number of 'old erpreneurs' is likely to increase, with 8% of those surveyed wanting to set up a business on retirement.

The research also sought to understand ambition amongst different generations and found that the mean age for feeling most ambitious is 31 years old.  Although those respondents aged 18-25 estimated that they would feel most ambitious at 26, those over 55 were, on average, most ambitious at 35.
