How to Disarm Combative Conversations
Difficult conversations are an inevitable part of any manager's job. To manage them well, you need to forget power contests and use a strategic approach instead:
1. What do you want to get out of the conversation? Think through what outcome you want to help you keep moving forward despite the screwy turns of a difficult conversation.
2. What working relationship you aim for? In a difficult conversation, it's worth explaining what your preferred working relationship is, as your counterpart may not know that or may have different expectations.
3. Focus on the future. Describe your ultimate goal and the benefit of your vision. It is easier and more effective to talk about the good things we want. Find the common interest and negotiate a win-win compromise.
4. Identify what's in the way. With the future as your backdrop, articulate what is interfering with reaching the goal. This helps to keep the conversation away from personal barbs and focus on making positive changes.
The Pink Prescription: Facing Tomorrow's Challenges Calls for Right-brain Thinking
In a world where jobs can be sent overseas, tasks can be automated and the feverish pace of technology can render even last year's innovation obsolete, students will have to learn how to think differently than their parents in order to survive and prosper, says Daniel H. Pink, author of three bestselling books about the changing work environment. He spoke at the recent Wharton Evolution of Learning Symposium.

Digital Britain’s biggest challenge - winning ‘hearts and minds’
While Digital Britain is in the centre of the Government’s plans for economic recovery and future industrial competitiveness, only around half of MPs (46%) and one in three councillors (38%) think digital investment will help the UK recover from the current economic downturn. Similarly, at least a quarter of business leaders (27%) actively disagree ‘digital’ has any role to play in economic recovery.
The link between social exclusion and digital exclusion is not universally accepted, with only 60% of MPs, 55% of councillors and 55% of business leaders believing the internet could help to level the playing field and bridge class divides. There is also considerable confusion over what digital exclusion actually means, with most believing that not having access to the internet in the home is the ultimate definition of exclusion.
There are also significant differences between the political parities, with Labour MPs and councillors being more likely to see digital matters as key to economic recovery. The good news from industry is that the majority (70%) of business leaders see a strong economic case for businesses to support digital inclusion initiatives.
