Three new opportunities for feasibility study funding for UK businesses
The Technology Strategy Board is launching three competitions for investment in feasibility studies, inviting UK businesses to bid for a share in 6m of funding.
The investment is being delivered as part of a new fast-track process designed to enable businesses to gain quick access to finance and companies wishing to bid will need to respond quickly; the calls open on 1st September, 2009 and close on 1st October, 2009.
There are three separate competitions, one focusing on the government's Digital Britain agenda, a second on Regenerative Medicine and a third technology-inspired call covering a range of priority areas from Advanced Medicines to High Value Manufacturing.

How to do risk management?
Risk management is the process of identifying, analysing and responding to project risk. It is very important for any business since without adequate risk management in place, the chance of delivering a project within ‘time, cost and quality’ may be compromised.
In small businesses risk management is often neglected due to difficulties in allocating resources, since staff working on risk management is taken away from more profitable activities. But risk management, when it is done well, will minimize spending by helping to identify risk and avoid its negative effects on costs.
This article explains the key steps in risk management and provides some useful templates for implementation of risk management processes. ...read more....
4 tips to optimize your workspace for productivity
Many of us spend most of our waking hours in cubicles or offices. It's critical to make those spaces comfortable and conducive to productivity. Here are four tips to design a space that helps, not hinders, your ability to get the work done:
1. Cut the clutter. Get rid of the papers, extra hole-punch, etc. Be ruthless and throw away the things you really don't need and file away the things you might need later.
2. Keep frequent-use items close. If you don't use your stapler every day, you don't need it front and centre. Reorganize so that the commonly used items are within reach and less-used items aren't taking up valuable space on/near your desk.
3. Put related items together. Group items by task. Store your stamps with the envelopes and your file folders near the file cabinet.
4. Adjust as needed. After your initial reorganization, pay attention to recurring tasks that may require adjustments. If you start using your stapler daily, move it closer.

One in five of those surveyed chose web 2.0 as the best technological development of the last ten years
In the same study, 73 per cent of those polled said that business and government must work together to promote the development of skills needed to bring the UK out of recession.

Gibraltar to share tax information
The United Kingdom signed a Tax Information Exchange Agreement (TIEA) with Gibraltar on the 27 August, which will help to ensure that those liable to tax in the UK pay the right tax on investments in Gibraltar and on supplies of goods and services into and out of the UK.
The new TIEA with Gibraltar provides for comprehensive exchange of information to the OECD and international tax standard in respect of UK taxes of all kinds. The UK has now signed eight comprehensive TIEAs, including with Guernsey in January and with Jersey in March 2009.

Swine flu warning for employers
With the holiday season nearing its end, employment lawyers are warning of a spate of personal injury, health and safety, and negligence claims from employees who say they contracted swine flu at work unless businesses take steps to consider what will happen if someone is affected.
Pregnant women and those members of staff with a history of serious health issues should be carefully monitored and alternative working arrangements, such as flexible working time or working from home, should be put in place when the virus is suspected to be present within their working environment.
