What to do when faced with a cyber squatter?

According to WIPO, the number of cyber squatting cases has risen every year since 2003 and in the last year alone, a pronounced increase in cyber squatting has been identified.  Since domain names are a critical asset to any business, here are 3 tips on how to fight cyber squatters:

1) If you wish to complain about the registration of a domain name which ends ".uk", the dispute resolution service operated by Nominet is worth considering.  Nominet is a not for profit company entrusted with managing the database of .uk internet domain names. It offers a specific procedure for resolving .uk domain name disputes either through mediation or, where this is not possible, through an independent expert's decision.

2) Where the abusive registration involves one of the generic top level domains or gTLDs (for example .com, .info, .mobi, .name, .net, .org) a legal framework has been established for pursuing a complaint utilising the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy administered by WIPO. This offer a route that is faster and cheaper than going to Court and the decision makers are experts in this field and decisions are usually reached on paper without the need for a hearing.  The procedure also offers a single mechanism for resolving domain name disputes regardless of where the parties are located.  Once a complaint has been instigated, the Registrar of the offending domain name is obliged to prevent the transfer of that name to any third party pending a decision. The Registrar must also implement the final decision once published.

3) If you are the holder of trademarks then you may be able to pursue an action for trademark infringement. Alternatively or in addition, you may find that you have a claim in passing off. However, Court action can be both costly and time consuming.

Four simple ways to boost Search Engine Optimisation

There are lots of ways to improve your site's ranking on major search engines, and we've highlighted the four easiest, and also most important ones, to get you started:

1) Add Unique Content to Your Site  -  Use Google Adwords to find keywords that your audience is most likely to use to find you and embed them into your content. Provide high quality content to engage readers and make other sites to link to yours.

2) Put Keywords in Key Places - They must appear in titles, headings & subheadings.

3) Create a Sitemap  -  Sitemaps can improve SEO by displaying links to pages on your site that search engine bots might miss otherwise. Structure your site's pages from broad to specific, and try to keep them no more than three clicks from the homepage.

4) Add Links with Strong Anchor Text  -  When linking to sites, make the anchor text match closely the URL you are pointing to.  For example, here are two ways to link to www.ipower.com/product/googlewebmastertools.bml:
Weak anchor text:     "Check out Google Webmaster Tools, here"
        Strong anchor text:    "Check out
Google Webmaster Tools here"

Staff At Mobile Phone Company Sell Customer Data To Rivals

The Information Commissioner has announced, today, that employees of a major mobile telephone company, later revealed as T-Mobile, have unlawfully sold thousands of customer account details, including names, addresses, telephone numbers and contract expiry dates, to the company's competitors.  Employees at the German-owned firm appeared to have passed the confidential details of accounts to several brokers in return for "substantial sums of money".  The third parties are thought to have cold-called customers whose contracts were due to expire, on behalf of rival networks, offering them cheaper calls, phone upgrades or other inducements in a practice known in the industry as "slamming".

The Information Commissioner, Christopher Graham, divulged the existence of the scam as he called for tougher sentences on individuals who breach data protection laws.

Out of the recession is emerging a 'new breed of business owner'

According to a recent article published by the Financial Times, the number of female enterprises could double in10 years, taking the total of self-employed women running businesses to more than 2million in the UK.

Redundancies have led many women to conclude that self-employment no longer offers less job security than full-time employment, and “through desire and necessity” many decided to set up enterprises.  For example, the Direct Selling Association had seen a year-on-year increase of 15 per cent in self-employed female representatives, since the web has made it possible for women to set up small businesses and work from home in a way that was not possible in the past, the report says.

YOUR RANT...
Am I the last to learn this about Twitter?

Last week I decided to get a Twitter account.  My “life changing” moment came at The 140 conference, where Kevin Slavin, MD of area/code, predicted that by 2012, 20% of non-video digital data transmission will originate from sensors.  And how will they communicate: most probably by tweets.  Twitter is an instantaneous, device-agnostic message broadcast system and thus perfect for mediating alerts, advice and assistance.

Just think of he house plants that tweet you when they need to be watered, ovens that give status report on the progress of your pot roast and flats that monitor energy consumption while you are on holiday.  Even the Thames tweets now to city engineers!
And there is another awesome development on Twitter: pitching
