Business owners fight back against tax
The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has spoken out after plans for a new Business Supplementary Rate Bill were announced last week on behalf of small business owners, who want the government to give them more of a say in where their tax money is spent.
The new rules proposed by the government would allow local authorities in England and Wales to levy a local add-on to the existing business tax and use the cash generated to fund regional investment projects. This new Bill is currently under review by the Public Bills Committee, and the FSB is calling for the government to implement safeguarding measures to protect small business owners and offer them the opportunity to vote on any new supplements, as well as an independent review to decide how the money will be spent.
BUSINESS ARTICLE of the WEEK
What Really Lies Behind the Financial Crisis?
What was the true cause of the worst financial crisis the world has seen since the Great Depression? Was it excessive greed of the big banks? Was it mark-to-market accounting? The answer is none of the above, according to Jeremy Siegel, a professor of finance at Wharton Business School. While these factors contributed to the crisis, they do not represent its most significant cause and Siegel provides a detailed analysis of the factors that fueled the meltdown.
NEWSFLASH of the WEEK
Healey confirms every council guaranteed grant increase despite downturn
The government is to provide over £ 73billion for English councils next year guaranteeing a 4.2 per cent funding increase, despite the economic downturn. Overall this means local government has had above-inflation grants every year since 1997.
The Government expects the average council tax increase to be substantially below 5 per cent and John Healey has written to councils that Government will take again capping action against any excessive increases, as it did in 2008-09.
The Government has also removed the ring fences from 29 funding streams - leaving councils free to spend that money as they see fit to meet local needs and priorities.
This settlement represents a continued real-terms increase in investment in local government, which will allow authorities to continue to deliver improving services at an affordable cost.

MANAGEMENT TIP of the WEEK
Take Responsibility for Your Missteps
Every manager makes mistakes, but when you do, resist any urge to attribute it to forces beyond your control. A clear mark of effective leaders is the willingness to take responsibility for their failures. To keep yourself accountable for mistakes:
1) Stay vigilant. Make sure you're always aware of what's going well and not so well in your group. To do this successfully you need to take frequent steps back from the day-to-dayoperations to observe, see "the biger picture" and reflect.
2) Acknowledge your mistakes. To do so isn't a sign of weakness; it's a measure of leadership. The sooner you accept that you've slipped up, the sooner you and your group can move forward.
3) Commit to improvement. Before you can improve your own performance, you must commit yourself to making a positive difference.
